Pradaxa is used to prevent stroke in patients with a heart condition called nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. It works by preventing blood clots, but this anticlotting action can also cause dangerous side effects, including excessive bleeding form trauma and spontaneous internal bleeding.

Other blood thinners can cause the same bleeding problem, but Pradaxa bleeding is more dangerous because there is no antidote to reverse the effect of Pradaxa so the clotting can resume.

FDA Questions Pradaxa Safety

Pradaxa has not been recalled, but the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is conducting a safety review. The agency announced the review in December, 2011, just a little over a year after it approved the drug.
