Pradaxa Side Effects

Pradaxa Attorneys

Pradaxa is an anticlotting drug prescribed to people who are at a high risk of ischemic stroke due to a common heart rhythm abnormality called nonvalvular atrial fibrillation (AFib). Pradaxa is effective in preventing blood clots, but can have deadly side effects. If you have been injured by Pradaxa, the Pradaxa side effects attorneys at The Hickey Law Firm, P.A. can help.

Heart Attack

Cleveland Clinic researchers reviewed the results of seven separate trials involving 30,514 patients for a study that was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, in January, 2012.

The researchers found that Pradaxa use increased the risk of heart attack and acute coronary syndrome by 33% when compared to controls which included warfarin, enoxaparin, and a placebo.

Serious Bleeding Events

Pradaxa is an anticoagulant, which means it minimizes or prevents clotting. It can cause excessive and uncontrollable bleeding if trauma occurs, even minor trauma.

Pradaxa can also cause spontaneous bleeding including:

  • Internal bleeding
  • Gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Bleeding in the brain

Preventing One Kind of Stroke and Causing Another

Pradaxa is prescribed to prevent ischemic stroke. Ischemic stroke is caused by a blood clot which blocks the blood flow to the brain. However, Pradaxa can cause hemorrhagic stroke, which is bleeding in the brain.  If you have been seriously injured by Pradaxa, please call our Pradaxa side effects attorneys today.

Pradaxa Bleeding is More Dangerous

All anticlotting drugs can cause spontaneous bleeding and excessive bleeding from trauma. The biggest difference with Pradaxa that makes it more dangerous is that there is no way to stop the bleeding quickly.

When bleeding occurs with other blood thinners doctors have reversal agents and methods for stopping the anticlotting action of the drug so that the bleeding can be brought under control.

There is no reversal agent for Pradaxa. The only way to stop the anticlotting action is to remove the drug from the body. Dialysis is recommended, but the process takes hours and only removes up to 60% of the drug. Patients can lose so much blood that they die or suffer permanent impairment, long before the bleeding can be controlled.
